Three British Chamber Shanghai focus groups join forces to present this panel discussion event, examining how that technology is being used in practice, specifically in relation to improving customer experience and employee experience. 

Co-hosted by the Chamber's Human Resources Focus GroupAdvanced Engineering & Manufacturing Focus Group and Hospitality, Leisure, Food & Beverage Focus Group, the event gathers three industry experts to share with attendees practical examples of how technology is being deployed and incorporated into their businesses. The panel will explore the potential tension between creating customer and employee experiences, as well as the need for improved productivity. Some lessons learnt, and how to avoid pitfalls will also be shared.

The panel is moderated by Erik Walenza-Slabe, CEO at IoT ONE. The panelists are:

  • Robert Xia, Commercial Manager, China at Virgin Atlantic (Robert will share insights on B2C customer experience)
  • Jesse Zhang, Director of Software Engineering, Black Lake Technologies (Jesse Zhang will share insights on B2B customer experience)

Erik Walenza-Slabe


Erik Walenza is the CEO of IoT ONE, the Co-chair of the American Chamber of Commerce Innovation Committee, and the Shanghai Director of Startup Grind. IoT ONE is the leading source of information and insight regarding Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) vendors and technologies. Companies work with IoT ONE to conduct research into IoT domains, plan their IoT adoption strategies, and build organizations capable of ideating, building, and deploying digital solutions.

As Co-chair of the AmCham Innovation Committee, Erik works with members and partners to develop and exchange best practices for innovation strategy and technology trend mapping and, through Startup Grind, supports the development of Shanghai's innovation ecosystem. He has interviewed over 50 CEOs, VC partners, and domain experts to build one of Shanghai’s largest networks of entrepreneurs and investors. He regularly advises early stage entrepreneurs and provides introductions to help small teams leverage external resources to drive their growth. 

Robert Xia

Commercial Manager, China, Virgin Atlantic Airways Ltd

Has nearly 20-year airline/hotel sales leadership experience.  Robert has a rich knowledge on Travel Industry, and has his own insight on Chinese consumers travel behaviours. Currently he works for Virgin Atlantic Airways to be the Commercial manager China. He and his team have the passion to provide a better travel experience to the customers who travel between China and UK.  

Jesse Zhang

Director of Software Engineering, Black Lake Technologies

In Black Lake and previously, Jesse has been helping enterprise customers on their digital transformation journey from a wide range of industries such as manufacturing, retail, energy, healthcare, aviation and entertainment. By leading the development of IoT, analytics & AI software suites, he served some large IT companies like GE Digital, Cisco Systems, Adobe as well as start-ups. He himself is also an enthusiast and early adopter of advanced methodologies and technologies in software engineering.
