The Scottish Focus Group and the Marketing Focus Group are delighted to invite you to a very special joint event: the next meeting of the Scottish Connections business network and the next recording in the very successful Live Lounge series of Podcasts.

The overall theme for the event is Maximising Scotland – A China Perspective. At this event you will be able to:

  • Meet other members of the Scottish Connections business network and other marketing professionals. The event has been designed to encourage maximum circulation, networking and dialogue. Good food and refreshments will be on hand. 
  • Hear from Kevin Liu, the newly appointed Head of Greater China and Energy Trade Lead for Asia Pacific, Scottish Development International (SDI), on the strategy for growth for Scottish industries in China and how the Brand Scotland initiative could be leveraged.
  • Discuss and hear insights from a panel of experts on the topic of how premium Scottish consumer products can grow in China and how brands can maximise the brand of Scotland in China.

Speaker Introduction

Kirsten Johnston IMBA (Moderator)

CEO & Brand Strategist, JWDK

Kirsten Johnston is founder and CEO of JWDK, international branding consultancy and design firm. Headquarted in Shanghai, JWDK specialises in strategic brand positioning and brand development for Chinese and International organisations within China.

Kirsten is from London and carries over 20 years of design experience. She has lived in China for five years and advises businesses on how to maximise brand value through design and has strength in place branding and corporate branding programmes.

Kirsten holds and International MBA and currently serves as the Chair of the Marketing Focus Group at the British Chamber of Commerce Shanghai. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts (RSA) in the UK.

Kevin Liu

Head of Greater China and Energy Trade Lead for Asia Pacific, Scottish Development International

Kevin Liu is the Head of Greater China and Energy Trade Lead for Asia Pacific for Scottish Development International. Kevin comes into the role having had a career that has spanned both the private and public sector with significant commercial experience covering trade and investment between the UK and China.

Most recently he was Head of Communications & Marketing for Asia Pacific for the Department of International Trade (DIT) based out of Singapore. Prior to that he was Director of Sales with Scottish whis-ky company R&B Distillers, based in Edinburgh having previously founded a trading company that brought UK consumer brands into China. He was a board director of a London-based political risk con-sultancy that advised on several Chinese outbound investments in oil & gas, mining, telecoms and infrastructure. He also spent some time working in the UK Government Cabinet office. He is a graduate of the London School of Economics.

Josh Lane

Regional Director - Asia, Holland & Sherry

Josh Lane is the Regional Director for Holland & Sherry Asia. Within this territory, he is responsible for overseeing the sales channels and growing the brand in more than 10 countries including Japan, Korea, Greater China and all of South East Asia.

Originally from Yorkshire, England, Josh emigrated to China in 2011 and has been based in Shanghai ever since. During this time, he has been steadily improving his Mandarin skills which is helping to bene-fit the accessibility and awareness of Holland & Sherry products in the Far East. Although the company is over 180 years old and with a long-standing reputation as one of the best cut length suiting fabric supplier in Europe, more recently the brand is enjoying strong growth in emerging markets, especially since the establishment of their Asian flagship showroom which opened in Shanghai in 2016.

Jeffrey Xu

China Representative, Begg & Co.

Growing up locally in Shanghai, Jeffrey graduated from University of Minnesota Twin Cities majoring in Retail Merchandising. In 2016, Jeffrey joined BRIO, a luxury classic menswear concept shop in Beijing as Marketing Manager. Jeffrey became an agent for Begg & Co in China since 2017 and joined the company in 2019 as China Representative. Begg & Co is a luxury cashmere brand made in Scotland since 1866.

Simon Lee

Managing Director & Head of Investment & Capital Markets, International Merchandise Exchange & Exhibition (IMX)

Simon Lee is responsible for IMX's strategic planning in investments as well as capital structure; before Simon joined IMX, he was Head of Institutional Business at CSOP Asset Management covering institutional clients in Europe & Hong Kong Chinese ETFs. Prior to CSOP, Simon was Bloomberg's North Asia ETF Specialist primarily covering offshore Chinese asset managers. Earlier in his career, Simon worked for Credit Suisse, Mayfair Pacific Financial Group, and Fubon Bank in Hong Kong. Simon started his career at China's State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE) as an Analyst and was subsequently promoted to Portfolio Manager responsible for managing part of China's Foreign Reserves.

Simon earned his BA Degree from UCLA.

Lee Folland

Director of Research, Reuter Communications

Lee set up and leads the research and insights function at Reuter Communications, an integrated luxury intelligence, digital, communications and marketing agency based in Shanghai.

With more than 10 years of research experience across China and the Asia-Pacific, Lee has experience across various verticals, including luxury, retail, fashion, beauty, jewellery, hospitality, and health and wellness. In his role at Reuter Communications, Lee is responsible for growing the agency’s research and insights capabilities through developing proprietary research offerings and leveraging research and insights to develop clients’ China strategies.

Prior to his current role, Lee led research teams at Kantar (WPP Group’s research and data arm) and Jigsaw (one of Chinas first qualitative research agencies). He has a Master of Philosophy in Chinese Studies from the University of Cambridge and has lived in China on and off for 8 years.
