[Review] 2017 Annual General Meeting – ExCo Elections Results!

On Tuesday 23 May, the British Chamber Shanghai welcomed members to gather at the InterContinental Shanghai Pudong for the Chamber’s Annual General Meeting.


Hosting the evening was Chamber Executive Director, Phil Roebuck, who kick-started the evening by delivering an audio message on the Chamber’s continued dedicated service to its members, sent from the Chamber’s Chairman, Barry Piper:

“We have taken great steps to evolve the Chamber into your modern business hub. Today we are one of the most relevant means of, not only promoting your business, but helping you win real work and making sure both British and Chinese governments hear you loud and clear. In essence, helping members to help members.”

Presenting Chamber members with an in-depth debrief on the Chamber’s performance over the 2016 period, Phil presented the Executive Director’s Report and Treasurer’s Report 2016, which highlighted some key milestones, including:

  • The Chamber’s transformation into a WFOE;
  • A review of the British Business Awards 2016;
  • The Chamber’s new chargeable services - Training School; Showcase Service; Event Consultancy; Business Chaperone Service; and the innovative UK-China Hub for Offshore Wind;
  • ExCo’s latest initiatives – Constitution reform and Focus Group governance update;
  • Publication of the Centenary Year Book

Following the Chamber’s Executive Director’s Report, Andrew Moss, member of the Chamber’s Advanced Engineering & Manufacturing Focus Group, along with Ray Chisnall, Chairman of the Construction & Property Focus Group, provided members with key updates on the latest developments and activities of their respective focus groups. 

Prior to the announcement of the ExCo election results, Karen Banks, Chair of the Chamber’s CSR Committee, delivered her insights on the many successes following the Chamber’s CSR endeavours across 2016. Highlighting the Bright Eyes project which visited 36 schools, tested the eyesight of 11, 000 children and teachers, and provided 10% of those with glasses.

After over three weeks canvassing period with ExCo potentials reaching out to the wider Chamber membership, the remarkable efforts of the ExCo prospective candidates lead to a surge in voter turnout with the figure increasing from 14% in 2016 to an overwhelming 47%.

The Chamber would like to use this opportunity to express its sincerest thanks to all candidates that campaigned for an ExCo position and extend special congratulations to those newly elected ExCo members:
