A Royal Success – British Chamber Shanghai Annual Ball 2018

Published on 2018-05-24

On Saturday 19 May, almost 400 guests gathered at the Pudong Shangri-La hotel to celebrate the Royal Wedding at this year’s “Royalty & Weddings” themed British Chamber Shanghai Annual Ball.

In a surprising turn of events, guests of the “Royalty & Weddings” ball experienced rainy skies while those attending the Royal Wedding basked in sun and warmth. Despite the unexpected role switch, the Ball went off without a hitch – much like the Wedding itself.

The night kicked off with a cocktail reception where guests enjoyed Tennents beer and wine while getting excited for the wedding festivities to begin. As the Princes rolled up to Windsor Castle, guests practiced their royal poses in our very own throne room. From Shakespeare to a Royal Guard – the British Chamber Shanghai Annual Ball had it all.

Guests were welcomed into the ballroom with both the commencement of the Royal Wedding and the beautiful sound of performers from Harrow International School Shanghai, who performed the classic “They can’t take that away from me.”

There was also a tribute to the Queen and the Princes with Studio 188 performing songs by none other than Queen and Prince, in a session made possible by one of our entertainment sponsors, Virgin Atlantic.

The night was made even more special with a performance by students from Wellington College International Shanghai, who wowed us all with their uncanny ability to harmonise in their performance of “This is me.”

Finally, UCFB provided us with a lively ending to the night as they brought some amazing football freestylers to get everyone in the mood to watch some late-night football.

Best Dressed Awards

It truly was a regal night, we even had a surprise visit from the Queen herself! Not only did she bring along the Royal Wedding Cake for everyone to enjoy, she won the coveted Best Dressed Female Award! As well, one of the Queen’s guards nabbed the Best Dressed Male Award, and a colourful group of fairy tale characters (including Shakespeare himself) went home with the Best Table award, all of which were kindly sponsored by Holland & Sherry, Germain Tailors, and Dechamps.

Charity Fundraising

As fun as the night was, the true measure of its success is that we have raised sufficient fund for the night's chosen charities, Shanghai Young Bakers and HandsOn Shanghai! Through the generous contributions from the silent auction, live auction, and the raffle, students at Shanghai Young Bakers will be able make even more delicious pastries with their new industrial mixers and volunteers at HandsOn Shanghai will be able to attend their beach clean-up event!

All in all, it was a truly wonderful night. We here at the British Chamber Shanghai would like to thank all attendees for their generosity and the following loyal sponsors for making this night possible.
