After 3 days of hard work, the ladies were ready to put up their best performance for the last stop with Virgin Startup.
For this session, the task given by Virgin was to devise a strategy for entry to the Chinese market for the fitness business, Virgin Active.
Compiling the experiences from previous mentorships and their knowledge of the Chinese market, the ladies quickly snapped into place and jotted down ideas and details including budgeting for this task.
After 3 hours of efficient brainstorming and discussion, the VOWers had completed their final presentation for the VOW project
Mei Shui- CEO of Virgin Startup arrived and greeted the VOWers. Mei gave background information about herself and Virgin Startup. She shared with the ladies that she believed in the work force, what is important is fundamentally down to the ability of the individual and gender should not be a big influence.
Mei then introduced a pre-recorded video by founder of Virgin Group, Sir Richard Branson. In the video, Sir Richard Branson greeted each VOW lady and explained the task to them.
Then the group leader for this task- Haiyan began the presentation of the day's hard work.
Virgin Active is a high end fitness club providing not only top notch fitness facilities but also quality first hand fitness class for the membership. The VOWers see the original business model that is operating well in the West may not be the best fit for Chinese Market and therefore gave the model a twist and presented this idea to Mei. The presentation focused on targeting mid-high end customers and creating not only a health and fitness centre but a social centre where people can spend one whole day and meet other people.
Mei commented on the presentation and went into further discussion with regards to the Chinese market.
The VOW ladies are established business women in different fields of expertise; they were able to comprehensibly present their knowledge of the Chinese market to Mei and at the same time learn more about the international market.
A whole day at Virgin Startup came to an end. Let us listen what the VOWers said about this experience:
“The team worked very hard this week. Case analysis and comments were recognized. At the same time we received valuable comments from the mentors. This was a week of rapid absorption and growth.” - Yvonne Huang
“Being the team leader this time round, I was under a lot of pressure, as my English is one of my weaker areas and the task was associated with a lot of technical terms. Developing strategies is not my strength but thankfully the team was very helpful and was very good at working together. In the end, we were able communicate well and recommend an entry strategy which also seems very operable. I felt it was very welcoming during the video when the founder of the Virgin Group addressed all of the VOWers by our first names - not an easy thing to do! According to the three UK mentorship tasks, the China Market is definitely one not to miss out on but due to the large cultural difference, there is still a lot of work that needs to be done.” - Haiyan Yu
This moment came to an end to the mentorship with Virgin Startup and the VOW project.
Appreciations are given to all the hard work the ladies, the mentors and staff that have contributed to the VOW project. Creating something, participating in it, allowing it to soar and at the same time promote female leadership. Thanks to all!
